Dustin McGowan is finished for the season. McGowan will undergo season-ending surgery on his pitching shoulder.
The surgery will repair fraying of the labrum and will be performed by Dr. Timothy Kremchek on Thursday in Cincinnati.
McGowan has not pitched since being placed on the disabled list on July 9 do to the sore shoulder. He was diagnosed with a tear in his rotator cuff earlier in the season, but continued to pitch.
In 19 starts for the Blue Jays this season McGowan was 6-7 with a 4.37 ERA.
The Blue Jays are optimistic that McGowan will be with the club for the start of spring training, but it will be more clear after the surgery.
"That’s the best-case scenario... we always prepare for worst-case scenarios, but hopefully we’ll get good news." - Ricciardi
The surgery will be the second major procedure on his pitching arm. McGowan went under the knife in 2004, requiring Tommy John surgery when he blew out his elbow.
