Brian Tallet bounced back from an awful start by no-hitting Tribe batters through six. However the normally dependable bullpen faultered and the Blue Jays lost in 12 innings, despite being a strike away from winning the game in the 9th.
The Blue Jays hit the scoreboard first when in the second, Scott Rolen lead off with a double, then moved to third on a grund out by Lyle Overbay, then scored on a sac fly by Rod Barajas. They added another in the third when Adam Lind scored Aaron Hill on a solf double. 2-0 Blue Jays.
Brian Tallet cruised through the first six innings, but ran into trouble in the 7th. After allowing the Indians first hit, with one out in the 7th Matt LaPorta hit his first Major League home run. 2-2 score. They added another when with the infield drawn in, Ben Francisco beat the throw home on an infield ground ball to Marco Scutaro. 3-2 Indians.
However, the comeback kids answered back quickly with two runs of their own in the bottom of the 7th to regain the lead. Vernon Wells singled in Scutaro and Hill with two outs. 4-3 Blue Jays.
Fast forward to the top of the 9th. With two outs and a runner on second base, Brandon League coughed up the 4-3 lead in dissapointing fashion. On an 0-2 count, League threw a plate-splitting change up that was lined into right field for a base hit. Pitch runner Josh Barfield came around to score. League would allow two more runs before the third out was recorded. 6-4 Indians.
Starting Lineup
Cleveland Indians @ Toronto Blue Jays - May 4, 2009 (Box)
A the deflating collapse in the top of the 9th inning, the Blue Jays rallied back and scored twice in the bottom frame to send the game to extras. With two out, Jose Bautista singled in Marco Scutaro and Alex Rios, on a clutch sinking fly ball single to left field off Indians closer Kerry Wood, who until then had yet to blow a save this season.
After a scoreless 10th and 11th, Shawn Camp was smacked around for 3 runs in the top of the 12th and the Blue Jays could only answer back with one of their own in the bottom half. Hill with two on, struck out to end the game. Indians win 9-7.
The Blue Jays were strike away from improving their record to 19-8... but hey, that's baseball. They'll have a chance to get back on the horse tomorrow starting at 12:37. Brett Cecil will be making his Major League and Blue Jays debut on the hill for the blue birds.
The Boston Red Sox (16-10) defeated in Yankees, so they're once again within a game of the Blue Jays (18-10) for first in the division with their 9-7 loss.
