The Indians struck first in the second when a single from Ben Francisco got away from Travis Snider, allowing an unearned run to score all the way from first. Francisco eventually came around to score as well, after stealing third, on a 6-3 force out.
The Blue Jays answered back quickly in the bottom of the second when Lyle Overbay doubled in Adam Lind with two outs.
The score remained the same through the sixth as Brett Cecil, 22, showed why he is one of the Blue Jays top prospects, silencing the Indians, allowing just three hits over his last 4 innings of work. Cecil struck out 6 and did not walk a batter.
The Blue Jays would reward Cecil for his efforts as they gained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, giving Cecil a change to win his debut. Lind scored Snider and Marco Scutaro on a single to center field. 3-2 Blue Jays.
But the lead was short lived, as once again, the wheels came off for a second night in a row. When the dust settled after the Indians 7th, the Blue Jays were down once again after Jason Frasor, Jesse Carlson and Brian Wolfe combined to allowed 4 runs.
Starting Lineup
Cleveland Indians @ Toronto Blue Jays - May 5, 2009 (Box)
But the comeback kids showed why, right now, they are the top offensive club in the bigs. The Blue Jays exploded for 7 runs in bottom half of the 7th.
With the bases juiced, Aaron Hill cracked a single to center field scoring Raul Chavez and Snider. Alex Rios followed with an RBI single, scoring Marco Scutaro from second base. After Vernon Wells flied out, with Hill and Alex Rios on base, Adam Lind deposited a 1-2 slider, off a lefty-specialist, into the seats and was immediately followed by a back-to-back solo home run from Scott Rolen.
After 11 runs were scored by both clubs in the 11th the Blue Jays were on top 10-6, which held until the end. Scott Downs came on in the 8th and pitched until the end, but wasn't credited with a save due to the score. Brian Wolfe was credited with the vulture win.
With the victory, the Blue Jays improved their American League East leading record to 19-10. The Boston Red Sox, having swept their two game series at New Yankee Stadium, remain a game back of the Blue Jays with a 17-10 record.
The club will open another mini-series tomorrow in Los Angeles, then will make the trip north to Oakland for the weekend.
